Ha, just kidding. Nothing is that simple in this country!
In the past there have been a few places in Geula, Ezras Torah, Bais Yisroel and Rechavia that have sold mass-produced prepared shabbos food, if you can call it food. There have even been a few makolets and other places that have attempted to make fresh shnitsel and roasted chicken that were actually delicious until they were shut down for illegal production. So, over the last few years, lots of talented, young married girls started creating menus or cooking specialty items and selling them to tourists that come in for the holidays or vacations. Truthfully, if you’re organized enough to know how much food you need, and what you are going to want to order, this is really your best bet. Even though most of the food will be made in advance and therefore frozen, it is usually the most delicious choice. These girls care about the product they are giving you and will provide you with real home cooking. However, there was no place, that was both CLEAN and had a good hechsher, where you could buy everything you needed, last minute, for shabbos, and know that you were buying food that people would actually be happy to eat.
Meet “Shabbos Bistro”.
A new store, opened in the Rechavia section of Jerusalem, by Meir and Miriam Ofek in August 2016.
Miriam, a professional pastry chef, was originally looking to rent a small space where she could sell her beautiful and delicious pastries. Anyone who has ever visited Rechavia though, understands what a huge challenge it is to find anything
at all that is reasonably priced whether its to rent, buy, live in, or open a store in. So when a storefront became available in an amazing location, although slightly bigger then they had imagined, they simply had to take it!
Knowing that the size of the space was too big for just a simple pastry shop, they knew they had to do something amazing with it. Thinking about what the neighborhood really needed, they set about trying to find the best catered shabbos food around. After hearing so many rave reviews about the delicious food from Rosemary Catering he went one friday morning to check it out. For the first time ever since getting married, Ofek called his wife and told her not to cook for shabbos. Meir was so impressed by the food there, he brought it home for his family to taste.
Since that shabbos, the Ofek’s have worked hard day in and day out to make “Shabbos Bistro” come to life. The food gets delivered, to them from Rosemary, on Thursday and then again on Friday. It comes out of the van piping hot (I know, I watched the whole delivery happen), and is plated and presented with the utmost care and attention to detail.
They have everything from in house grilled steaks, 4 different types of chulent, freshly fried shnitsel, a huge array of salami, the most varieties of herring I have ever seen in one place and even wine, grape juice and challah. Not to mention their beautiful selection of handmade desserts. It is your one stop shop to make Shabbos happen!
They are still in their infancy, but Meir and Miriam are very excited to serve all the native Jerusalemites and our annual Succos visitors.
The best part of all is that there is no need to shlep everything back to your apartment by yourself. All through the yomim tovim, Shabbos Bistro will be doing deliveries!
So, be sure to stop by, stock up and enjoy your days OUT of the kitchen this Succos!
Can’t wait to see you all here!
